Justice For Ari

By Yuri Orizaba de Ashman

Arisai Orizaba was a kindergarten teacher and Scout leader who moved to Playa del Carmen to the end of 2008 to find new opportunities. On her way she met (unfortunately) Jose Antonio Sanchez Solis, a native of Chontalpa, Tabasco.

Jose Antonio (or Pepe Toño, as his friends know him) chased her for about a year before Arisai accepted to go out with him. Arisai, accustomed to the care of her family, felt vulnerable in a distant city. Jose Antonio took advantage of that and gradually began to show his obsessive side. Arisai tried to end the relationship and was faced with blackmail ("if you go I'll kill myself") and constant stalking by Jose Antonio. Blackmail climbed to verbal abuse and ultimately to physical abuse. Unfortunately her family was clueless about the situation and the violence continued to escalate.

Jose Antonio began to be frecuent a friend who Arisai was scared of as he used to drink a lot and was particularly upset as Jose Antonio used to bring him to her house. This was compounded when one of the neighbors saw Jose Antonio and his friend using drugs in a vacant lot near the house where Ari lived.

Ari's family and her friends came to visit her in September and the last thing she said to them was that she was ready to finish the relationship with Jose Antonio.  Jose Antonio was detained a few days after for burglery and went out on bail. It is believed that this was what pushed Ari to finally end the relationship.

Arisai was brutally beaten and suffocated. Eyewitnesses confirmed the arrival of Jose Antonio and his friends to the house of Ari and his departure. Jose Antonio took Ari's cell phone, sending messages posing as her, to give himself time to escape.

Arisai's body was left at home for days, as something that was used and is no longer needed.

After several days of trying to communicate with her, her father and uncle traveled to Playa del Carmen, where they found his body in a an advanced state of decomposition. This was in October 2010.

Ari's family has been working  five years trying to bring the Jose Antonio to justice. The family of Jose Antonio has 5 years providing him money and means of escape.

Our aim is that the case is not to be forgotten, raise awareness and bring Jose Antonio Sanchez Solis to justice.

And for this we need everyone's help.

Cifras en Mexico

Almost half of the Mexican women (over 15 years old) - 46.1% - have been victims of violence by the hands of their partners, according to official figures. The main reason is not reported because they believe that this is an insignificant act.
